Once upon a time, I had a dream to create a publication of sorts that would put to print stories of sincere efforts to make this world a better place.
I thought then to call it ‘Matter: What You Do Counts.’
I wanted to be able to share stories and information that deserve to be heard. To spark little candles in the hearts of those who think all hope is lost. To make people care. To connect people who do. To inspire movement.
It has been years and that dream hasn’t seen the face of reality. There were ways to get it rolling but I always felt like a thread or two wasn’t put in place. Not enough money, not enough time. I had a roster of the usual excuses. The dream never left my heart though. When I’m asked what I foresee myself doing way down the line, the vision of this resurfaces.
Haunted by the persistent desire to make it happen, I have since figured out that that loose threads form part of the perfect equation. And this blog, my 899th perhaps, will try to give life to my objectives then. This blog is my microstep to that goal. A preparation of sorts for when I’d have enough stories compiled and more importantly, enough confidence in writing (and discipline to keep at it) to give justice to the trees that will die for my print.
I dedicate whatever the outcome of this blog may be to my son, who as of writing, is on his 32nd week of formation in me. In a couple of months, he will see the world that we have collectively built for him. Problematic as we deem it is, I believe in our capacity to change its direction. But first we must, as National Geographic has placed it, live curious. Ask. And with the answers, or lack thereof, that we have gathered, create necessary action.
May the information to be shared in this blog inspire people to move. To dispel complacency and complaining and replace these with resolve. To carve the world we deserve to live in. To reawaken the possibility of possibility.
Aiming for much? Maybe so. But I’ll take my chances.
